The American Turkish Society and Moon and Stars Project are proud to support "Istanbul Cool! What’s Happening in Contemporary Turkish Art Now", a much-anticipated exhibition of work by contemporary Turkish artists. The exhibition will offer the work of 27 artists living in Turkey, as well as the U.S. and Europe, including past Moon and Stars Project grant recipients and will present the work of both well-known and established Turkish artists, and emerging artists whose work will be on view for the first time in the U.S.

An illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition, and will include essays by Maryam Homayoun Eisler, noted art collector; Emin Mahir Balcioglu, art historian and Director, Contemporary Istanbul; and Sefa Saglam, Director of Exhibitions, The Neue Galerie, New York.

As Emin Mahir Balcioglu, Director, Contemporary Istanbul, notes in the catalogue essay, “Contemporary art from Turkey is in the limelight (at last); its debut has been delayed for several reasons, but today, supported by a vibrant emerging economy and an ever increasing group of collectors, it has begun to thrive. This is all very new and remarkable; the fact that Turkish artists are beginning to showcase their works not only in their own country but abroad, and as the days go by are more and more acknowledged, proves that there are considerable transformations at hand.”

Istanbul Cool! What’s Happening in Contemporary Turkish Art Now is dedicated in loving memory of Ali Can Ertug.

IFC Films Presents: Fatih Akin's SOUL KITCHEN

In Association with Moon and Stars Project and The American Turkish Society
Location: IFC Center (323 Sixth Avenue) and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas (1886 Broadway)
Other:
Fee: Non Member Fee: Free / Member Fee: Free

Opening Friday, August 20, 2010 at the IFC Center and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas

Presented in association with Moon and Stars Project and The American Turkish Society

Filmmaker Fatih Akin, known for celebrated dramas like Head-On and The Edge of Heaven, serves up a delightfully fresh comedy with his latest award-winning film. Soul Kitchen is a delicious, free spirited story of food, friends, and rock & roll; winner of the “Special Jury Prize” and the “Young Cinema Award for Best Film” at the Venice Film Festival; and a smash with audiences at the Toronto and Tribeca film festivals.

The film centers on a likable but hopelessly disorganized restaurateur, Zinos (co-screenwriter Adam Bousdoukos) whose cafe is second home to a motley crew of lovable eccentrics. When his girlfriend Nadine moves to Shanghai, a love-sick Zinos decides to fly after her, leaving his restaurant in the hands of his unreliable ex-con brother Illias. The mayhem that follows is a hilariously entertaining story of self-realization, set to an irresistibly soulful soundtrack.

“One of the Current World Cinema Scene’s Most Exciting Filmmakers.”
Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times

“A Rollicking, Beat-Crazy Foodie Comedy… Purely Entertaining”

A Breakfast Discussion with Stephen Kinzer

The Columbia Business School Alumni Club of NY, The American Turkish Society, and Turkish American Business Forum are pleased to present a breakfast discussion with Stephen Kinzer following the June 8 release of his latest book, “Reset: Iran, Turkey, and America’s Future.”

What can the United States do to help realize its dream of a peaceful, democratic Middle East? Stephen Kinzer offers a surprising answer in this paradigm-shifting book, to be released on June 8. Two countries in the region, he argues, are America's logical partners in the twenty-first century: Turkey and Iran. Besides proposing this new "power triangle," Kinzer also recommends that the United States reshape relations with its two traditional Middle East allies, Israel and Saudi Arabia. This book provides a penetrating, timely critique of America's approach to the world's most volatile region, and offers a startling alternative.

8:00 - 8:30 am - Registration
8:30- 9:30 am - Book Lecture & Question and Answer Session
9:30- 10:00 am - Book Signing & Networking

The event fee includes a copy of the book and breakfast.

We would like to thank Herrick, Feinstein LLP for sponsoring this event.

Fatih Akin's "Soul Kitchen" at Tribeca Film Festival

Date: April 22, 2010

Location: Village East Cinema 6

Soul Kitchen
IFC Films presents U.S. Premiere

Director Fatih Akin dishes out lighter fare in his delightful and appropriately titled Soul Kitchen. Having previously achieved worldwide art-house fame for such brooding and powerful films as Yasamin Kiyisinda (The Edge of Heaven) and Duvara Karsi(Head-On), Akin is at ease and in great form in this wistful comedy.

Zinos Kazantsakis runs a no-frills pub in Hamburg called Soul Kitchen, where loyal locals flock for the good grub and music. His idle life begins to tilt when his girlfriend takes a job in China, fast-tracking his plan to leave the restaurant business forever. However, his exit strategy gets derailed in this vibrant comedy of errors. His surly brother is recently out on parole and needs a job, and his new chef's fancy fare is turning away the currywurst-loving customers. To make it all worse, he just slipped a disc, and a greedy businessman is trying to steal his family's property. What ensues is a foot-tapping-music-filled, mouthwatering journey of revelations. Soul Kitchen is a deliciously fun and heartfelt romp, and Akin has proved that—no matter what the genre—he can serve up poignancy and soul from his own filmmaking kitchen. --Genna Terranova

A Vienna-based group formed in 2004, Fatima Spar and the Freedom Fries is a Euro-Asian indie jazz band with a Turkish singer that integrates swing and musical styles from the Balkans. Their music encompasses an artistic blend of multiple instruments like trumpet, saxophone, accordion and bass. The band derives its name from the euphemism for French Fries used in the U.S. after the French government’s refusal to support the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and consists of Fatima Spar (vocals), Milos Todorovski (accordion), Erwin Schober (drums), Philip Moosburger (double bass), Florian Wagner (guitar), Alexander Wladigeoff (trumpet), and Philip Yaeger (trombone).

The group averages around 100 concerts every year, and has performed in many renowned concert halls throughout Europe including Notting Hill Arts Club in London, Wiener Konzerthaus in Vienna and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as well as leading music clubs in Belgrade and Istanbul. The lyrics, which find emotion in Fatima Spar’s contemporary jazz voice, are mostly in English and Turkish. When asked about how she would like to be remembered, Fatima Spar told Turkish Journal, “Precious but fleeting”, which it may be said, is also a good depiction of her band’s brilliant amalgam of sounds. Falling somewhere between 1930’s and today’s music, the band’s tunes resemble avant garde artists such as Pink Martini and Paris Combo and yet retain their own individuality.

Some of their most popular songs including 'Egyptian Ella' (a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald), 'Bosa Noga', 'Kızılcıklar Oldu Mu', and 'Kibirli Ceviz' are covered in their second album Zirzop and their latest album Trust was recorded in Frankfurt’s renowned Hazelwood Studio. The story behind the album’s title song, 'Trust', is poignant and politically charged. “I read a racist propaganda letter in a bus line, which said ‘Kill all Muslims’ with an image showing a man hanging off a scaffold,” says Fatima Spar. The group would then go back to the studio to produce the album. Trust contains a skillful mix of romantic and political songs such as 'My Little Someone', which tells the story of a great love, and 'Biting Creepers', which continues with the same theme, depicting love and kisses as best antidotes to hypocrisy.

Fatima Spar has been nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award and the BBC World Music Award, among others, and her band was also the first Austrian band that played in the official program of Womex, the world music expo.

A special thanks to Pegasus Transport Service, Ali Baba Terrace, Istanbul Cafe & Restaurant, and Mr. and Mrs. Eray Artan for supporting this event, and Village Voice and Radyo Turkum for being a media sponsor.

The American Turkish Society and Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, New York University (ISAW) present a lecture with

Christopher Roosevelt
Associate Professor of Archaeology
Boston University

on the topic:

“Probing and Preserving the Past in Western Turkey: The Central Lydia Archaeological Survey”

The Central Lydia Archaeological Survey has been investigating all periods of the human past in central western Anatolia since 2005. The project focuses on a roughly 350 sq. km. area surrounding Marmara Gölü (the ancient Gygaean Lake), around 10 km north of Sardis, the capital of Lydia in the Iron Age. In addition to the funerary monuments of Bin Tepe, the area of a "thousand mounds" commonly identified as the royal cemetery of the Lydians, the project has shed light on periods ranging from Paleolithic to recent times. This presentation highlights recent discoveries including a network of large, well-preserved citadels that may have composed the core of the Seha River Land, a Bronze Age kingdom important to the Hittites in their territorial control of western Anatolia, as well as rifle trenches and other emplacements associated with the outbreak of the Turkish War of Independence. Along with such ongoing investigations, the presentation emphasizes preservation initiatives that encourage local and regional efforts to protect heritage landscapes through a variety of monitoring and outreach programs, including annual inventories of looting and destruction, as well as community meetings and educational programs for children.

Christopher Roosevelt is an Associate Professor of Archaeology at Boston University. A member of the Archaeological Institute of America, the American Research Institute in Turkey, the British Institute of Archaeology in Ankara, and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, he is the recipient of a National Science Foundation grant for a project titled “Environmental and Cultural Dynamics in Central Lydia, Western Turkey.” He has contributed to the American Journal of Archaeology, the Journal of Field Archaeology, and other journals and edited volumes.

Sponsored by Herrick, Feinstein LLP.

Reception will follow lecture.

Mr. Ozdemir serves as Musica Sequenza's artistic director/conductor, as well as bassoonist of the ensemble. The ensemble made its debut on January 2009 at Peter J Sharp Theater at The Juilliard School's Chamber Music Fest in a performance of C.P.E. Bach's Concerto, Wq.166 in an arrangement transcribed by Mr. Ozdemir.

The 2009 - 10 concert season also included performances at the American Irish Society, The New York Society for Ethical Culture, a masterclass performance featuring gamba virtuose Jordi Savall at Juilliard's Paul Hall, Alice Tully Hall and Maiden Lane.
